Process Post #6 – Music Struggles

So far, throughout this process, I am connecting more with the music I am picking out to review and listen to. When I go through and listen to the albums and songs to write a review, it never is a one-time listen, and then I am done. I listen to the entire album, noticing the songs that I find most intriguing or ones that the lyrics are written wonderfully. In my posts, in general, I pick out a different number of songs to write a small “analysis” of to give the audience an understanding of what the mood of the song is and what the meaning of the song is through my interpretation.

As for my initial goal of expanding my music taste and overall listening portfolio, I am unsure if I have fully achieved that goal. A lot of the new music that has come out recently is in similar genres: indie, alternative rock, folk, and pop, which is mainly what I listen to, along with some single songs from other genres. My goal is to expand that and branch into rap/hip-hop, Latino/reggaeton (music in Spanish, my second language), and anything else other than my usual taste. So far in my reviews, there has been only one somewhat genre “breaking” album that I reviewed: “AUSTIN” by Post Malone. I think the following albums I do reviews for, I am going to challenge myself by picking a Latin artist like Bad Bunny since he did come out with a new album very recently, and I will look for a new rap album that has come out recently, too.

Another issue I have witnessed when doing the reviews is that I cannot find an album that has come out recently to review. I am looking for new songs and records that I have not heard yet so that my initial reactions and commentary in the reviews are the very first impressions. That is why some of the other album reviews are from either a few months old albums or even older than that. The recent ones that I find fall under the music genres I usually listen to, so I will need to find a balance.
